Types of Eye Emergencies

Physical Trauma

Physical trauma can take place in or around the eye, leading to:

A black eye
Eye bleeding
Eye pain
Swelling

If you experience physical trauma, place a cold compress on the area and immediately call us or another medical professional.

Chemical Exposure

Please call us if your eyes come into contact with any of these chemicals:

Bleach
Vinegar
Battery acid
Soaps
Ammonia
Pesticides
Fertilizer

Symptoms can include eye pain, burning, redness, swelling, watery eyes, and more. If this occurs, flush your eyes with cool, clean water for 15 minutes, and call a medical professional.

Tears, Rips, & Punctures

If you experience a tear, rip, or puncture to the eye, do not apply pressure. Cover the area with an eye shield and call emergency services.

Foreign Object in the Eye

Small foreign objects, including dust, metal debris, and wood shavings, can cause discomfort or pain.

You may be able to remove these particles by blinking or flushing your eyes with cool, clean water. But if you can’t remove the item, you may experience more severe damage and should call a medical professional as soon as possible.

Eye Diseases

Some eye diseases can lead to vision loss, flashers, floaters, redness, or eye pain.
